{"id":231,"date":"2012-02-24T09:54:55","date_gmt":"2012-02-24T13:54:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.slickcharters.net\/River-News\/?p=231"},"modified":"2024-11-22T06:08:15","modified_gmt":"2024-11-22T11:08:15","slug":"manatee-sightings-on-the-silver-and-ocklawaha-rivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slickcharters.net\/River-News\/2012\/02\/manatee-sightings-on-the-silver-and-ocklawaha-rivers\/","title":{"rendered":"MANATEE SIGHTINGS ON THE SILVER AND OCKLAWAHA RIVERS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slickcharters.net\/River-News\/2012\/02\/manatee-sightings-on-the-silver-and-ocklawaha-rivers\/manatee-022412\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-233\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-233\" title=\"manatee-022412\" src=\"http:\/\/www.slickcharters.net\/River-News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/manatee-022412.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"520\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slickcharters.net\/River-News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/manatee-022412.jpg 520w, https:\/\/www.slickcharters.net\/River-News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/manatee-022412-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.slickcharters.net\/River-News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/manatee-022412-400x299.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the spring of 2011, we spotted Florida Manatees on both the Silver and Ocklawaha Rivers.\u00a0 This was the first time in several decades that the Manatees had made it into these bodies of water.\u00a0 As we are approaching the months in which they were sighted last year, we hope to see them back again.<\/p>\n<p>Rodman Dam was constructed in 1968 as part of the Cross Florida Barge Canal.\u00a0 When the Dam and Buckman Lock became operational, the\u00a0 normal migration patterns of the Mantees that used the Ocklawaha River were interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>The manatees move in the winter months to warmer waters such as those found around Silver Springs and other natural springs.\u00a0 Somehow the Manatees found their way here last year, and enjoyed the constant water temperature\u00a0 around the many springs of the Silver River.\u00a0 The extremely cold winter of 2011 that we experienced may have motivated their appearance.<\/p>\n<p>The survival of the Florida\u00a0Manatee is one of the reasons that environmentalists hope to\u00a0see the removal of Rodman Dam and Buckman Lock.\u00a0 What to do with Rodman Dam\u00a0 has always been a controversial issue, as the pros and\u00a0cons involved affect many interests, human and natural.<\/p>\n<p>In the interest of the Manatee, their existence has been found as far back as 8500 B.C.. \u00a0Paleo-Indians, the first inhabitants of Florida, hunted the Manatee.\u00a0 The English declared Florida a Manatee Sanctuary in the 1700&#8217;s, and Florida enacted the first protection laws in 1893.<\/p>\n<p>Those of us who spend time on the Silver and Ocklawaha Rivers are anxious to see if the\u00a0 Manatees return this year.\u00a0 Please take the time to post a comment by clicking on the link below if any 2012 sightings occur.<\/p>\n<p>Low water levels on the Rivers continue to be a concern, as well as the high winds the area has received recently.\u00a0 Keep an eye out for downed trees and limbs as you navigate both the Silver amd Ocklawaha.<\/p>\n<p>Until next time&#8230;see you on the Rivers!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the spring of 2011, we spotted Florida Manatees on both the Silver and Ocklawaha Rivers.\u00a0 This was the first time in several decades that the Manatees had made it into these bodies of water.\u00a0 As we are approaching the months in which they were sighted last year, we hope to see them back again. &hellip;
